The U.S. Army began using leather belts as part of non-commissioned officers’ uniforms around the time of World War I.
Commonly known as a “garrison belt,” the term “garrison” refers to garrisoned troops, and the belt came to be called this based on that etymology.

The leather—vegetable-tanned cowhide—is thick and stiff, with a firm, resilient texture and a tight-knit fiber structure that retains the natural feel of the material.
The stamping on the back of the belt faithfully reproduces the original title and logo from that era, signifying that the surface of the carefully selected cowhide has been uniformly smoothed. Additionally, the edges feature a twisted finish; by pressing a heated tool against the edges to create a line, the leather fibers are tightly compressed, enhancing durability.

The “JQMD” stamped on the loop—which helps keep the belt from shifting too much—stands for the Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot in Indiana, a military supply base, indicating that the belt was manufactured in 1939.

The buckle was crafted using a mold based on an original buckle from that era. It is fastened with a ball-stud snap button, the same type used on the A-2 jacket; the presence of this part attests to the belt’s origins in the “good old days” and serves as one of its standout features.
