Lot No. LA-009
This original box, crafted from carefully selected Japanese paulownia wood, is designed to store a “shoe polishing kit.”
Inspired by the “artistic wooden boxes” used to house valuable items and works of art—such as sake cups and hanging scrolls—this box was created by designer John Loftgren, himself a collector of Japanese antiques, with the hope that it would be cherished for many years, just like the boots and shoes it holds.
Shoe Polish
Developed in collaboration with Japan’s oldest shoe polish shop, which has been in business since the Meiji era.
The polish is filled using the “three-pour” technique—a method preserved for over 100 years—which enhances the surface sheen, makes application smooth, and provides leather shoes with moisture, nourishment, and a beautiful luster. It is an emulsified cream formulated with natural carnauba wax and premium waxes.
Oil
Carefully selected natural ingredients make this leather oil gentle on both the leather and the environment. It imparts suppleness and water resistance to leather goods.
Leather Cleaner
Powerfully removes dirt, old cream, and wax from leather shoes. Formulated with hyaluronic acid to refresh the leather.
Cloth
This soft yet durable flannel cloth is ideal for wiping and applying products, ensuring a smooth and even finish.
Horsehair Brush
This shoe brush, specially commissioned from a brush specialty shop with over 100 years of history dating back to the Taisho era, is designed for dusting. It features the reliable, meticulous hand-planting techniques of Japanese artisans and is of the highest quality. The handle is intentionally left unpainted for a comfortable grip.
Use this at the very beginning of the polishing process to remove dust from the entire boot.
The use of horse tail hair provides just the right amount of firmness, making it ideal for gently and efficiently removing dust.
Boar Bristle Brush
This shoe brush, custom-ordered from a brush specialty shop with a history spanning over 100 years since the Taisho era, is designed exclusively for polishing. It features the reliable, meticulous hand-planting techniques of Japanese artisans and is of the highest quality. We have deliberately left it unpainted for a comfortable grip.
This brush is used to work emulsion-based cream into the leather.
Spread the cream over the entire shoe and work it in thoroughly. The firm boar bristles are ideal for vigorously working the cream—which is essential for the leather—into the surface.
Please use this to bring out the sheen of the leather.
Paulownia Wood Box
Unlike boxes made by simply joining wooden boards, the manufacturing technique for “artistic wooden boxes” involves carving the box from a single piece of wood, ensuring the grain flows seamlessly. To protect against dirt, the box is finished with natural beeswax.
