The “souvenir jacket” (Sukajan) is said to have originated as a memento for U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan after World War II, featuring embroidered emblems of their units.
The company involved in its creation was Minato Shoji Shokai, the predecessor of Toyo Enterprises. As a trading company established following the dissolution of the zaibatsu, it engaged in the import and export of fabrics and had deep ties to the fabric used for aloha shirts.
This item, now in its third reissue, features prints of the eagle, tiger, and dragon—some of the most popular designs among the souvenir jackets produced by Kōshō.
At the time, all fabrics featuring Oriental designs printed on crepe were produced in Japan, and the aloha shirt movement that swept through Hawaii and the U.S. mainland after the war had a significant impact on Japan as well.
This piece was originally produced exclusively by Kōshō Shōkai for sale at U.S. military PXs (base stores), and it is an extremely rare item bearing the “FASHION MART” label—the brand name Kōshō used when exporting overseas.
■Rayon kabechirimen is a fabric made with untwisted rayon warp threads and rayon kabechirimen weft threads. It is relatively common in traditional Japanese patterns and features a textured surface that provides a cool, refreshing feel. Originally developed as a fabric for traditional Japanese clothing, it is characterized by its beautiful, painterly coloration.
Enjoy its smooth, refreshing feel—perfect for wearing during hot weather.
