SUGAR CANE

SUGAR CANE. This distinctly American-sounding brand, named after “sugar cane,” was actually the first postwar Japanese clothing manufacturer to produce garments specifically for the U.S. market. TOYO ENTERPRISE COMPANY LTD., the creator of SUGAR CANE, was established in 1965 to serve personnel at U.S. military bases in Japan, following the U.S. military’s full-scale intervention in the Vietnam War.Initially, the company manufactured clothing for the U.S. military while also serving as a distribution hub for U.S. military surplus goods in Japan. When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, it transitioned entirely into a domestic apparel manufacturer. It was at that time that an officer stationed at a U.S. military base named the brand “SUGARCANE.”Although SUGARCANE was born in Japan, having grown up serving U.S. military bases, both its spirit and manufacturing know-how were shaped by American influences. From its inception to the present day, the brand has continued to produce authentic workwear centered on denim—a material that has come to symbolize American style.
