Inspired by the thick-knit sweaters typical of the 1920s and 1930s—such as those worn for baseball warm-ups—this model is a truly stunning creation that blends Free Wheelers’ passion with the craftsmanship of skilled artisans.
A “turned-down collar” refers to a shawl collar; this simple sweater coat features a collar knitted into a loop shape, designed to create a natural, three-dimensional neckline.
■The fabric is a loose-gauge knit made from extra-thick wool yarn spun exclusively by Free Wheelers.
To recreate a texture that feels almost oily and smooth, we’ve blended British wool with other types of wool that have distinct characteristics.
The yarn, spun using an unconventional twisting method, is knitted to the absolute maximum density on special hand-knitting machines—of which there are only a few in Japan capable of handling such thick wool yarn—to create the final piece.
This is a truly impressive masterpiece, crafted using a delicate and labor-intensive traditional technique that takes even a skilled artisan more than two days to complete a single garment.
■The shawl collar can be fastened up to the neck with two loops and a small button.
■The front buttons are large, rustic-looking nut buttons.
